Summer and winter


Here are two symbols of summer and winter: on the one hand, the Diadema Olympic City (above), featuring Europe's largest athletics stadium, the Diadema Olympic Stadium, as well as Arena Diadema and several other smaller venues and facilities; on the other, Mount Yaja (below), which, at an altitude of 1088 metres, is home to a major, world-class ski resort and winter sports complex. Together with them, several other major venues are scattered throughout the city, namely: Europe's largest football stadium, Galandar Stadium (home to Xendra); Arena Plateia; Salmanya (Salmanha) Multi-Purpose Pavilion; the Figuayre Ring (Ringue da Figueira); Maravela's Prismaia (Theatre) Coliseum, the Maravela Ring (Ringue da Maravela), the Grand Platina Hall (or Arena), the Tamosa Opera House and the Crystal (Festival) Pavilion (this one on Neptune Beach or Praia Neptuno); Havenai's Arena Metropol and Leilandar Stadium (this one home to Rarisport); Xaena's Arena Futura and Baleia Stadium (this one the world's largest rugby stadium); Xandai's Planeta Xandai, Arena Cosmos, Xandai Expo City and Xandai Park (Parque Xandai); Arena Plataforma; the Esfera (Sphere); Xalandar Stadium; the Grand Academy Stadium, the world's largest stadium, which also dubs as a training centre; the outdoor (Mount) Velmarive (or Grand [Pipe] Organ) Belvedere; the equally outdoor Verisvar Amphitheatre; the indoor Melismar Amphitheatre; (Arena) Central Honguelai; Havandi Convention City; Tamosa Trade Fair Centre; Maiamar Regatta Centre; Prismaia International Circuit; Valmevar Country Club; Palmarive Jockey Club; Melvenai Velodrome; Dalmarim Aquatics City; Ravendar Tennis City; among many, many others.

The Nine

(Note: None of these mountains are in Tamosa.) I have walked the lines on maps that other people call impossible. I have stood at the lip of ridges where the air tastes of snow and of salt at the same time, and I have listened to rivers begin their long argument with the sea. In our Maritese stories those ridges are not merely rock and ice: they are the Nine Pillars of the Xayandic Ring (also known simply as the Nine), the great high places that bind the inland waters to the ocean and mark the limits of cycles. In what follows I will sketch the shape of those nine three-thousanders of the Xayandic Ring and explain why, to my people, nine is not a number but a vow. A crossroads called Tamosa

Tamosa, a major city located in central Portugal, more specifically on the country's Silver Coast ( Costa de Prata ), between Lisbon and Porto and forming the western edge of a diamond region with Aveiro to its north, Coimbra to its east and Leiria to its south, is situated at the confluence of the River Mondego (or Myndus ) into the Atlantic Ocean and the Prismaia Strait ( Estreito da Prismaia ). The city's main area spans from the Portuguese mainland to Prismaia Island on that island's westernmost point, Baleia Point ( Ponta da Baleia ). It is also home to the remote offshoot islands west of Baleia Point known as the Mayar Islands (also known simply as the Mayares).
